A New Model for the Lifetime Care of Rescued Pigs

Update

"The time has come, the Walrus said,
To talk of many things:
Of shoes...and ships...and sealing wax...
Of Cabbages...and kings...
And why the sea is boiling hot...
And whether pigs have wings......" (Lewis Carroll)

And so it is that after over 29 years of rescuing and caring for thousands of rescued pigs, we must contemplate retiring and passing the sanctuary and the care of the pigs on to someone younger and healthier.

For several years now I have been battling a worsening heart condition, which has made in increasingly difficult to take adequate care of the pigs and maintain the 100-acres that make up The Pig Preserve. We have been quietly searching for a group or an individual(s) willing to take the sanctuary over and continue its operation. Our intent was to make this a quiet and seamless transition. But, in over a year of searching, we have found no one suitable who was willing to step in and take the helm from us. We have made our plea to several other well-known, well-respected sanctuaries, but they have all declined for various reasons.

Now it is time to move our search to the "next level". Our concern, obviously, is that should something catastrophic happen to me...the sanctuary and the animals living here would be in jeopardy. It is not realistic to think that we can relocate or re-home the majority of the pigs living here.

It is our intent to offer the sanctuary as a fully operational, functioning sanctuary. In addition to the land and house, we will be leaving all of the barns and shelters, all of the fencing, all of the trucks, tractors, farm equipment and virtually all of the tools and equipment currently on the sanctuary. Everything is fully paid for and in good working order. Further, we are willing to remain in the area for as long as the new caretakers need us to ensure that they are fully up to speed on all of the animals and equipment. The new caretakers will also inherit our donor base, web site and facebook page.

Our plea, to those of you who follow us on facebook, is to help us get the word out to groups or individuals who may be interested in talking to us about taking over the sanctuary.

The Pig Preserve is a very special place. It has been built by Laura and me with a lot of love and terrific amount of blood, sweat and tears. The sanctuary still has a great deal of potential to grow well beyond what we have been able to do...in the right hands. It could easily be transformed into an "all animals" farm sanctuary should the new cartakers care to take it in that direction. There is a large pristine tract of land adjacent to the sanctuary that is for sale...so expansion beyond the current boundaries would certainly be possible in the future.

We are making this transition with very heavy hearts. The pigs and the sanctuary have been our entire life for many, many years and leaving will not be easy for us. But....it is time.......
