A New Model for the Lifetime Care of Rescued Pigs

We provide sanctuary for farm pigs, potbelly pigs and feral pigs that need a safe forever home! We have rescued pigs from all over the country and from many different kinds of situations. Abandoned, abused, neglected, escaped from factory farms and slaughter. They come from agriculture clubs like 4H and FFA. They come to us after being used as research subjects. Upon arriving here, though, they can shed their pasts and learn what it's like to be healthy, happy and loved. They teach us so much about resiliency and happiness. We are lucky enough to share our sanctuary with around 150 interesting individuals! You can read their stories here! And if you feel a special connection with anyone, please consider becoming a sponsor! For your $25 monthly donation - we will send you a quarterly update on your sponsored animal(s), behind the scenes sanctuary info and other surprise bonuses throughout the year! Your donations will help cover the costs of care for each animal - feed, water, shelters, fencing, veterinary needs, etc. Of course, if you would like to donate more, or are able to volunteer with your sponsored animal, that would be amazing as well! If you have questions, please email us at thepigpreserve@gmail.com!

You can sponsor one of our residents! Who's your favorite?

Damien and Sunshine came from a potbelly pig sanctuary in Florida. Because the two did not have enough room to roam, they became very difficult for the woman to handle, so she asked us if we could take them. Several attempts to get them here and thousands of dollars worth of trailer damage later (feral pigs don't do well in confinement, and will do whatever it takes to get out), they made it here to The Pig Preserve. They enjoy the company of each other, and set up camp with a group of our farm pigs. Now Damien and Sunshine have the freedom to roam all one hundred acres of the woods, pasture, and ponds.  And they do, but never far from one another. While they are comfortable around people they know, they can still be quite shy around visitors.

Easter weekend was fast approaching when a Craigslist ad featuring a little red piglet went up. The pictures showed a confused and lonely little girl living in a horse trailer. "BBQ pig, just in time for Easter, $80". A friend of ours spotted the ad, and asked if we could take her. Of course, as a rescue, we can't purchase animals. But our friend raised the money in just a few hours, and secured her safety. Off we went to pick up our girl. She was anxious, but as soon as she realized we were there to help her, she showed us how sweet she really was. She hopped in the car, and off we went. She is a social butterfly, and integrated seamlessly into the bigger herd. She is a very brave girl that loves attention, affection and treats! She is a great hostess to newcomers, and shows them around. She quickly took Charlotte and Sally Mae under her wing, and is still often spotted with them. If she's in a hurry to explore, though, she will take off on her own. Our fiery little redhead!

Baron and Sasha were purchased as young piglets and kept together in a pen for a while. Their owner had intended to breed them (to other, non-related pigs) but never got around to it. He grew quite attached to these sweet youngsters as time passed. As the pigs were growing, they were moved to a stall in an old barn on a friend's unused property. This was to be a temporary plan before they could be moved to a larger area with some grass. Unfortunately, the move never happened because the owner became incarcerated. The roof had a large hole, directly over their stall. They were standing, sleeping and eating in mud and excrement up to their bellies. It was a mess. While the pigs were always fed and loved, they were living in an extremely unsanitary environment. They could only peep at the outside world through a missing slat in the wall of their stall. One of the wonderful people that were caring for the pigs reached out to see if we could rescue them, and of course we could not say no. They are both very easy going and passive pigs that seem to love the freedom here. They have taken easily to the companionship of both the humans and the new pigs they’ve met.

When Twinkie was a little piglet, she somehow managed to find herself on her own wandering the streets. Likely, she fell off of a truck (this happens pretty frequently, actually) or escaped a pen. A kind lady saw her and managed to corral her into her garage. Luckily for Twinkie, her orignal owner could not be located. The local SPCA happened to have a barn at the time, so they took her in. They took care of her for a year, but they did not have much experience with farm pigs and she did not have much freedom there. When the group dissolved, new homes had to be found for the animals. We were happy to take Twinkie, and let her join our herd. It had been a very long time since she had been around other farm pigs, so she was cautious at first. But like all of our new kids, she quickly learned how to wallow in the mud, graze in the pastures and enjoy normal pig things!
